Our Campus
PIYALI
JUNCTION
Piyali Junction is a rural village about 30 kilometer outside of the bustling city of Kolkata, India.
In Piyali Junction village, the majority of the population at one time lived on less than $1 per day, and before the school was founded, literacy for girls and women was just over 50%. For most girls, school wasn’t an option as they were required to help with domestic work, which guaranteed future poverty for their families.
2003
In 2003, Piyali Learning Center (PLC) opened in a two-room rented house and welcomed 85 girl students in the first six months. Quickly becoming a hub of day-school education and medical care, it became obvious that a bigger campus would be needed to serve more of the population of women and girls.
2016
In 2016, on 3 acres of land, construction to develop a new vision for PLC began. Today that vision has been realized as an environmentally sustainable campus with fully equipped classrooms, a computer lab, full commercial kitchen, an organic vegetable garden and common areas for exploration of arts, dance, music, yoga, meditation, and life-skill training.
Nearly 40 women are enrolled in the vocational program, and over 200 girls are day-students ranging in age from pre-K to the 12th grade of high school.
Each student receives a state-approved education, books and supplies, uniform, two hot meals, hygiene kits, medical care and after-school enrichment programs.
Make a difference.
With your support, we can continue to grow and improve our campus to bolster the many developing skills of the students, and continue to develop Piyali Junction into a thriving community of rising, literate female leaders.
